Each day, a ball of fire crosses the sky but no one seems amazed. We take the Sun entirely for granted. Yet we also feel an ancient affinity with the Bright Light. It’s so familiar, we’ve given it the shortest name of any star. And nowadays, we urgently want to exploit its energy, as it delivers 1 kilowatt to each square meter of Earth’s surface.
