July 20, 2014, marks the 45th anniversary of humankind’s first step on another world. On that day in 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed Apollo 11 on the lunar surface and spent a few hours exploring the Moon.

Today no one knows when humans will once again explore another object in the solar system in person, but hopefully these photos from the milestone mission will inspire future generations to keep looking up.
