The festival will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication and the launch of the Jane Goodall EARTH Medal, bringing Nobel Prize laureates, astronauts, and leading international thinkers to Tenerife.

The STARMUS Festival has announced the first confirmed speakers for STARMUS VIII, which will bring together Nobel Prize laureates, astronauts, philosophers, and prominent figures from the environmental and life sciences in one of the world’s most unique gatherings dedicated to celebrating science, culture, and exploration.

Among the first confirmed participants are artificial intelligence pioneer Geoffrey Hinton — widely regarded as one of the “godfathers of artificial intelligence” — Nobel Prize–winning neuroscientist May-Britt Moser, astronaut, former Governor General of Canada and President of the Association of Space Explorers, Julie Payette, philosopher and bestselling author Steven Pinker, and STARMUS co-founder, astrophysicist and legendary musician Brian May.

The festival will feature eight Nobel Prize laureates, alongside astronauts and leading thinkers from philosophy, environmental sciences and the life sciences, continuing the STARMUS tradition of bringing together scientific discovery and artistic inspiration.

STARMUS VIII will also mark two major milestones:the10th anniversary of the Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication, created by Stephen Hawking together with STARMUS in 2016, and the presentation of the first Jane Goodall EARTH Medal, recognizing individuals whose work inspires the protection of life on our planet.

The Jane Goodall EARTH Medal was first announced last December at the Royal Society in Londonby STARMUS board members Brian May, Peter Gabriel and Garik Israelian. They were joined by the President of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Rosa Dávila; the Canary Islands’Minister of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture, Migdalia Machín; Mary Lewis, Vice President of the Office of the Founder – Global at the Jane Goodall Instituteand a longtime collaborator of Jane Goodall; philanthropist Sir Michael Hintze; and members of Jane Goodall’s family.

Additional speakers, artists and further programme details will be announced shortly.

The celebration of STARMUS VIII is made possible thanks to the support of the Cabildo de Tenerifeand theGovernment of the Canary Islands, whose commitment brings this international festival — uniting science, music and exploration — back to the archipelago and places the Canary Islands at the centre of the global dialogue between science, culture and society.

The festival takes place within the framework of the nominative grant awarded by the Cabildo de Tenerife to the Fundación Canaria Starlight for the organisation of STARMUS VIII, and also benefits from the collaboration of the Cabildo de La Palma.
