This dramatic aurora appears to cascade in the northwestern sky over the moonlit snow near Wickersham Dome in Alaska on March 20/21, 2002.
In the May issue, Astronomy showcased the stunning night sky photography of Dennis Mammana. He has been sharing images of the heavens with the public since he was 16, and he focuses on blending the celestial with the terrestrial. Because of this, Mammana doesn’t photograph the sky through a telescope — his only equipment is a DSLR camera and a workhorse lens — and instead captures stunning vistas featuring the Moon, stars, aurorae, the Milky Way, and more.

The six pages in the magazine featuring Mammana’s work, though, only provide a taste of his vast library of photographs. Below are 11 more images that highlight the photographer’s favorite targets. And if you want to see even more, visit Mammana’s website, http://dennismammana.com.
