What did we do with all our free time the past 200,000 years? By day, we mostly stared at the furry clothes we’d tossed on the cave floor and thought about cleaning them up someday. At night, we watched the stars. We noticed only two of their properties: brightness and color. Brightness differences were obvious, and the color business should have been just as clear cut. It wasn’t, and still isn’t.
