Wagging its tail

Allen Hwang from Deming, New Mexico

The twin dust and ion tails of Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks (the so-called “Devil Comet”) are visible in this image taken Feb. 14. The longer, ion tail has curves and distortions, perhaps due to interactions with coronal mass ejections from the Sun that passed by a few days prior. The image was taken with an 11-inch f/2.2 RASA telescope and four 2-minute exposures with a one-shot color camera.
