The multicolored aurorae

Barry Burgess, taken from Aspotogan, Nova Scotia, Canada

Green, red, and purple hues are all on display in this auroral display photographed on the morning of Jan. 20, 2026. The rare, vivid purples come light emitted at blue wavelengths by molecular nitrogen. The photographer used a Canon DSLR and 21mm lens at f/1.6 to take an 13-second exposure at ISO 1600.
