Heart of the cosmic sea

Flavio Vitale, taken from Rome, Italy

The Heart Nebula (IC 1805) lies roughly 7,500 light-years away in the constellation Cassiopeia. Like its nearby companion, the Soul Nebula (IC 1845), it’s an emission nebula that glows with a reddish hue. This photo was taken with Hα and OIII filters using a 10-inch scope and 6 hours of exposure time.
