Ask Astro

Telescopes and Equipment

I am struggling to find a system for telescopic observations of the planets and their major moons worthy of photographing. One wrinkle: I am in a wheelchair and almost blind.

Science

Plenty of really hot things exist in the universe. But do we know of fire anywhere besides on our planet?

Robotic Spaceflight

Why doesn’t NASA reuse space probe designs from successful missions like Cassini, New Horizons, and the Mars rovers? Using the same design and tweaking for landing on different planets or orbiting them would seemingly make the entire endeavor cheaper.

Deep-Sky Objects

Since the discovery of the “Pillars of Creation,” what changes have occurred within them and the surrounding area?

The Moon

Why does the daily moonrise time vary by as much as 60 minutes, and as little as 30 minutes during the same month?

Astronomy for beginners

How were the constellation boundaries set?

Exotic Objects

Ask Astro: Frozen stars

Cosmology, Science

Why are gravity and quantum mechanics incompatible with each other? Why can’t they be combined into a single formula or concept?

Solar System, The Sun

What will happen to the outer solar system when the Sun dies?

Exotic Objects

Are black holes always spheres?

Stars

What’s the difference between a brown dwarf and a planet?

The constellation Orion from the Northern (left) and Southern (right) hemisphere
Astronomy for beginners, Observing Basics

Why do the constellations and the Moon appear upside down from the Southern Hemisphere?
