Pluto's red tones shone through in Hubble images captured in 1994, but in this 1979 painting, John Clark colored the dwarf planet yellow and red. The painter says it was a "lucky guess" on his part rather than based on any specific scientific foresight. "Artists are known to take 'artistic license' on occasion, and there is always some deep-seated unconscious feelings we have," he says.
