Even though Gaia is tasked with mapping the Milky Way, most of the sky is in its sights. As a result, Gaia captured this image of Gaia14aaa, a supernova in a galaxy 500 million light-years away. The middle image of the triptych was taken by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.
