For decades, astronomers have sought the lightest noble gas molecule, helium hydride, in the planetary nebula NGC 7027, shown in this composite image. In 2019, they finally reported success, detecting the molecule. Helium hydride is thought to be the first type of molecule to form after the universe’s birth.
