The Vela supernova remnant in the constellation Vela the Sails was created by the explosive death of a massive star roughly 11,000 years ago. This two-panel mosaic spans roughly 8° of sky, with intricate filaments of shocked gas on display. The photographer used a 6-inch f/3.3 scope to take 95⅔ hours of exposure in SHO filters.
