Roughly 1,500 light-years from Earth, the Orion Nebula cluster contains about 30 stars resembling the early Sun. They tend to erupt frequently in massive X-ray outbursts. Scientists think the super-flares play an important role in helping rocky planets grow in disks that surround many of the stars.
