Scientists using the high-resolution MOC imager on Mars Global Surveyor believe they have located the Mars Polar Lander spacecraft, lost since December 1999. The images show what may be the craft's parachute and, about 470 yards away, a patch of dark, disturbed soil around a tiny, bright spot that may be the lander.
