The discovery of magnesium sulfate in the dirt at Gusev Crater shows that water has affected the history of the crater, albeit in a less pervasive way compared to Meridiani Planum. One possible explanation for these findings is that water percolated through underground material and dissolved out minerals, then as the water evaporated near the surface, it left concentrated salts behind.
