Pack-ice-like plates cover the ground in Mars' southern Elysium Planitia, a possible relic of an ice-covered sea. A team of planetary geologists think some of the ice probably is still in the ground. The image frame spans about 25 miles (40 km), and the scale of the features matches that of pack ice on Earth.
