The tiny grain revealed in this electron-microscope image was produced in a red-giant star and then found its way into an earthbound asteroid. Researchers have named the find OC2 and hope to recover similar particles to learn more about the conditions inside such stars. The smooth surface at left is a gold substrate, while the grain itself appears bumpy.
