This Apollo 17 image
shows the region of O’Neill’s Bridge and the crater that the author (among others) believes might be the cause of the illusion (on the right). Unfortunately, the direction of sunlight is opposite the necessary direction to see the “bridge.” To prove how easy it is for the interplay of light and shadow to fool us, the author searched the region for other “lunar bridges.” Using a 4-inch refractor and 315x, he found a smaller possibility (on the left) August 19, 2008 (lunar colongitude of 124.3°). It appears to be a lunar crater fragment or sections of a lunar ridge.
