Doug Zubenel captured Earth's shadow
in the west after sunset August 25, 2008, from Kill Creek Park in Johnson County, Kansas. During this unusual sight, which Zubenel later discovered was due to volcanic aerosols, a clean line separated the golden-yellow of the sunlit aerosol layer in the west from Earth's shadow above it. Several minutes later, that straight boundary dropped lower, until it "set" on the distant tree line.
