Looking through his 5-inch refractor
at 330x on the evening of January 4, 2010 (lunar colongitude of 124°), the author saw a scene much like this drawing. Note how in this view the shadows are just near enough to the “arch” to make it appear not only as if sunlight is streaming through it, but also enough to create the illusion that the arch’s shadow is projected onto the lunar surface. But if you look carefully, you’ll realize that the shadow (if this were a natural arch) is falling in the direction of the Sun, not away from it!
