Astronomers have discovered a planet orbiting a distant red-giant star, shown in this artist's rendering, using the Hobby-Eberly Telescope. In about 2 billion years, Earth will be uninhabitable as our Sun evolves into a red-giant star. Astronomers will study planets around stars in other solar systems to learn more about the future of our own.
