Studies of distant supernovae suggest the expansion of the universe was slowing down after the Big Bang, but today, the universe's expansion rate is accelerating. The Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) recently discovered two type Ia supernovae that may have existed during the transition phase when the universe's expansion began to accelerate.
