A bipolar nebula in M17 is home to the largest and most massive circumstellar disk yet known. White contours delineate the densest part of the disk. Visible stars appear slightly elongated due to the adaptive optics technique used. They are embedded within the M17 molecular cloud but are probably unrelated to the disk. The inset (bottom right) shows the central object, which measures 450 x 240 AU. M17 is 7,000 light-years away.
