The magnetic pattern reaching across Terra Meridiani resembles that seen on Earth where the sea floor is spreading. The martian pattern even includes the transverse faults (dashed lines) seen in terrestrial undersea mountain chains. This strongly suggests Mars underwent a period of plate tectonics.
