Right on cue: The 2004 Perseids spiked just as predictions based on computer models suggested they should. Particles shed by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle in 1862 — the stream that has made one complete revolution since being released — created the main outburst. A second stream of particles, released in the 14th century, may have produced the second peak.
