This MESSENGER image was taken from a distance of about 11,000 miles (18,000 kilometers), about 56 minutes before the spacecraft's closest encounter with Mercury. It shows a region roughly 300 miles (500 km) across, and craters as small as 0.6 mile (1 km) can be seen in the image above.
