Refrigerator-size Hayabusa, seen here during its assembly, apparently collected Itokawa dust. The long sampling horn (black) fired two tantalum pellets into the asteroid. The pellets hit the surface at 670 mph (1,100 km/h) and kicked dust into the instrument, which stored it for the trip to Earth.
