An inner basin among the Columbia Hills may contain the layered deposits Spirit has been seeking. Spirit should reach the spot named West Spur by June 1. The rover will most likely remain there for about a week to study outcrops and rocks in the area. When this study is complete, Spirit will drive some 2,000 feet (620m) to Lookout Point, a higher-elevation from which the rover can view much of the basin. Spirit could reach Lookout Point by June 20. Many locations near the feature called Home Plate may contain layered deposits.
