Campeche's old city walls
Campeche's old city walls protected it from pirates in the 17th and 18th centuries.

El Caracol
El Caracol, sometimes referred to as “the observatory.” The decayed remains of what was a cylindrical structure looks a lot like it could house a telescope. There is evidence suggesting that El Caracol was used as a lookout on the heavens.
Kudumomo
Tuluum
The only Maya monument situated on the coast where the beams of light shine through during important solar calendar dates.

Mayan ruins in Palenque
The most fascinating ancient Mayan ruins can be found in Palenque. Stone temples look out over the jungle from atop a ridge that hangs above surrounding mountains. Much of the history of Palenque has been reconstructed from reading the hieroglyphic inscription on the many monuments, and historians now have a long sequence of the ruling dynasty of Palenque in the seventh century and extensive knowledge of the city states rivalry with other states.
Carlos Adampol
For hundreds of years archaeologists and travelers have been fascinated by the ruins that comprise the remains of one of the high civilizations of the world: the Maya. A vast complex of ceremonial cities rose proudly in splendor in regions of Middle America as Caesar conquered Gaul. By the time Richard I set off on his third Crusade, this rich society of the Maya was in decline.

The rise and fall of this great civilization will be explored in the MAYAN TRILOGY tours. Join Astronomy magazine's columnist, Bob Berman, as he follows on the trails of the Maya in Mexico on Tour I: The Dynasty of Maya Kings.
