Glenn Chaple's observing basics: A bright star passes

September 2004: As a humble way of honoring Janet Mattei's memory, I'd like to figuratively tap you on the shoulder and tell you about the pleasures of VSO-ing.
In March, I received the sad news that Janet Mattei had passed away, a victim of an acute form of leukemia. Janet was the dynamic, inspirational director of the American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO), a role she had held since 1973. She was the AAVSO's shining star.
