The Large Binocular Telescope’s (LBT) journey from concept to reality wasn’t easy. First came protracted legal battles with environmentalists and other activists over access to the Mt. Graham site in southeastern Arizona. Then, in the summer of 2004, a 30,000-acre forest fire came within half a mile of wiping out the project for good.
