Description
Explore the astronomy of the Chaco culture in the American Southwest both in the classroom and in the field. The Chaco society, a prehistoric pueblo culture, flourished between AD 950 and 1150 throughout the San Juan basin of Northern New Mexico. Chaco Canyon was the center of this culture and there the Chaco people constructed multi-storied buildings noted for their symmetric organization, massive core-veneer masonry construction and numerous kivas. Astronomy played an important role in the Chaco culture and is expressed in the alignments of several large ceremonial structures at or near the center of the Chaco Canyon. This seminar explores the archaeo-astronomy of these peoples by providing an historical overview of the pueblo culture and visits to the important and relevant sites. Field trips to Chaco Canyon (at the summer solstice) and sites on and near Ghost Ranch will be central to the course and some low-grade hiking will be expected.
