The Full Moon over the Temple of Poseidon
CATEGORY WINNER: The Full Moon rises over the Temple of Poseidon in Sounion, Greece. The imager's main task was to identify the time that would yield the right balance between the Moon and the natural lighting of the temple. He then spent several months calculating the perspective sizes of the two objects. Finally, he identified which Full Moon rose closest to the temple.

Astronomy's 2009 Astroimaging Contest was a resounding success. You can see all the winning submissions and read more about them in the September issue of Astronomy magazine. But we didn't have enough pages to print all the images we received, so we're putting them all up on the website.
