Bob Berman's strange universe: Equator for sale
September 2007: Suffice it to say, it's fun being on the equator, even if science struggles to prevail there.

| I visited the enormous monument built on the "equator" near Quito, Ecuador, a few months ago. The area surrounding "Mitad del Mundo" offers a bustling scene with commercial shops, earsplitting bands, and a huge obelisk from which a line on the ground extends a long distance. Tourists get their pictures taken with one foot in the "Northern Hemisphere" and the other across the line in the "southern." Great fun, except, it's not the equator. |
