Bob Berman's strange universe: Tangled up in strings

January 2006: This New Year begins like any other, with scientists still trying to come up with a grand unified theory.

This New Year begins like any other, with scientists still trying to come up with a grand unified theory (GUT). Grand indeed is the noble goal of tying together the universe's fundamental forces. Einstein struggled with it unsuccessfully most of his life, and he wasn't the only one to have bad-hair days over it. But after listening to PBS specials or reading self-serving books, it appears the race is almost over. The goal is firmly in sight. The GUT-level Messiah: string theory.
