    Pioneer 10 and 11

Does anyone know where I could find images taken by Pioneers 10 and 11??  I looked at the NASA website of course, but could not find any of the photo's the probes sent back.  I know they would be pretty bad by todays standards, but surly they must have them archived somewhere!?!!!

    Re: Pioneer 10 and 11

There is a book called The Depths of Space (Wolverton?) that details the pioneer missions, and includes some pictures.

I have found many, many pictures on the web, just browsing (pioneer 10/11, Jupiter, Saturn, etc...).  Generally, the pictures were not as good as the wonderful images from Voyager.  The 'spin and scan' method was necessary on the Pioneers due to the rotation stabilization  that was employed (vs. Gimbled cameras on Voyager).  But, that being said, they are still out there.

If you are really in a pinch, email NASA Ames, the folks who designed and flew Pioneer, and ask them for some assistance.  I'm sure they will be able to help or point you in the right direction.

Pioneer was a great mission--I recommend the book....

If you've ever done much research with search engines you'll discover the best methods of finding out what exactly you are looking for.  Search engines work with tags mostly, so limit your search to key words that really help to narrow down what you are looking for without ambiguity and without "fluff".  For instance, if you want to find Pioneer pictures of Jupiter you can search for the following:

Pioneer 10 Jupiter, Pioneer 11 Jupiter, Pioneer Jupiter

Then click on the "Images" tab in Google.  This brings up a lot of results with a good deal of them actually images of Jupiter from the probes.  Typically it isn't too hard to find what you are looking for on the internet as long as you know what to type in the search engines.

I did try the search like you said and I did get some results, but its real hap-hazard. Mostly a mix of odd sized images and artist concepts of Pioneer by Jupiter.   I just find it odd that they don't have a site with all the images archived..... I tried at the NASA site on past missions and only get an overview on the missions and did find a link for the Pioneer website but the link didn't work.  It almost seems like they just packed up all the photos in a box a put them in the attic to forget about them!!

Yeah, I would imagine there is a siteon the internet somewhere with what you are looking for, but it isn't easy to find right off the bat.  I found some Pioneer archive websites but oddly enough they don't have any major assortment of images, which I find absurd.

    Re: Pioneer 10 and 11

It is!   I contacted the people at the NASA site about it  and they said that they did not archive any of it.  They gave me a link that had about 6 images labled as Pioneer 10 or 11 of Jupiter taken in 1973 or 4, and 3 of Saturn taken by Pioneer 11 in '79. No other details!!!   Boy you would think after all the millions in tax payer dollars spent they would at least keep the photo's !!!

Wonder how long till the Voyager images disappear!!!

    Re: Pioneer 10 and 11

I refuse to bellieve that NASA has not archived the raw image data form the Pioneer missions.  I think they simply do not want to release anything beyond the public release images, retouched as they are and assembled into coherent pictures.

Having looked at some of the images again, the quality differences between Pioneer and Voyager are readily apparent.  Voyager took full advantage of its stable flight with state of the art imaging cameras.  Pioneer used photopolarimeter equipment to capture images, and the quality deficit shows.

      Good luck in your quest.

     I dunno about that.

The only two images I found were of Jupiter by 10 and Saturn by 11.
They were both decent. Saturn being the better image. Sure they don't have the definition of the modern probes, but that's due to the decade they were built in. Let's not forget that.

BTW, I also found an image of Venus by them. It had decent detail but the mosaic wasn't put together right. It looked out of round.
