Using plastic-wrap to cover a mirror - good or bad?

When I received my mirror from Hands On Optics, it had a layer of plastic wrap over the primary to protect the surface.

After center-spotting my mirror, I tore off a sheet of Saran-wrap and put it over the mirror to protect it while it is out of the telescope.  I did the same to my secondary mirror after I cleaned it.

Then, I realized that Hands On Optics might be using a special kind of plastic wrap.  So, I started to worry.

Does anyone know if plastic-wrap on a telescope mirror is a bad idea?

    Thanks

I don't think you need to worry. Plastic wrap won't harm the mirror. You won't have it out that long anyway, before you start reassembling the scope.

I wouldn't think it would be a problem either as long as you keep the mirror away from heat sources which you are most likely doing anyway.  I would be concerned a bit if the mirror was dirty for fear of the plastic dragging some grit across the surface but again that is not a problem as the mirror is new.  For the short term it shouldn't be a concern.

    Hi,

I have had my primary covered with a large kitchen garbage bag and my secondary covered with a small zip-lock type bag for several years without any problems. I am very careful when I put the bags on or take them off, and try to avoid the plastic touching the mirror surface. After several years, I have not had any problems or damage.
