Thank you for posting this information. We are actively researching all of our web site properties for slow response times.
This issue appears to be much broader than with the Astronomy.com web site and the community features.
Thanks again.

As an update to the slow loading pages, today, as well as during the past 2 weeks, the pages are loading very slow with having to refresh the pages 60% of the time and slow speed loading 98% of the time. Hope this info helps this on-going problem for a lot of us using the site. Mr Q

I'm using Firefox 3.0.1 and of late ( about two weeks or so?) the site has worked well and I do not get blank or incompletely refreshed pages anymore.

Ed - That's strange. I upgraded to version 3.0 a week ago and it still made no difference here. Some of the new changes I didn't like so I went back to 2.0. I still don't know why some people (like me) have such a hard time with page loading while others seem to notice no problems????

Off and on again today this site has been slow. If I were to rate the performance of this site based on the performance today and a couple other days throughout this week I would rate it as poor to very poor. Just now it took more than 4 minutes to get back on to the forums. With a highspeed broadband conection that should be unheard of. I understand this is prime time for a Saturday, however, looking at the number of members currently on-line and the number of guests when I finally got back on, you can't blame it on the level local activity. There were only 85 guest and 7 members.

More and more often lately all I get is the adds. But, the reload or refresh isn't any slower or faster than it's ever been since this new server was picked.

Anytime I go to another area of the web site that still has the Almanac Java Applet and return to the Forums I run into trouble. Things lock up and I get an error message that tells me that the Almanac Java Applet has failed.
When that thing was first put up in that corner people were having troubles with it in the forums so Jeremy finally had it removed. Why is it still on other areas of the web site knowing it has a history of causing people troubles in the forums?

its slow, has been slow, and will continue to be slow- period- its full of ancient activity and loaded with $$ advertising, i just got used to it when i do post here. its not a bad site for starting astronomy, you can see that by the continual repititious threads, a large majority of experienced users drift off elsewhere anyway, so its come down to if you want to deal with the habitual slowness or not

tasco - But it's not slow for a lot of people. And yet it is for many people including myself. This is the mystery for me - why extremely slow for some but O.K. for others?????

we need to define slow here- that depends on alot of conditions, computer, type server- but using one computer say- Acom will take the longest time to load then other sites will, the extra 5-15 seconds now isnt that annoying (whatever it is) but until i got my broadband back- i gave up posting here while i had dial-up

Tasco - Earlier in this thread I gave my descriptions of slow and fast for response criteria. A lot of us out here are having a big problem with slow loading pages with frequent refreshing required - from several seconds to 30 + seconds and these users do have broadband connections. Yes, with dial-up connections, I'm sure a lot of people have left the site with the slow loading problem that's been going on here for the last several months or longer. Yes, there are a lot of variables involved, especially with the equipment on the users end but from what I've been reading on these forums, the problem started back when the site was restructured, regardless of the equipment on the users end.

I seriously feel sorry for the person using dial up and trying to get on here. It's been acting up again today. Its' not just me that has noticed it, it's not because of heavy activity, and even myspace.com is faster today. This forum has lost a lot of experience and knowledge because of these problems. Many of the experienced member that where at one time logged on more than me have moved onto other astronomy forums such as ODS (ourdarkskies.com) and CN (cloudynights.com).
This started back when the first switched over to the Community server. Since then it has been upgrade at least a couple times. The Latest up grade and restructure / redesign created the most problems and slow downs. Some of which was identified as the Almanac Java script which was eventually removed from the forum pages and may have helped some. That java script now has it so I can't switch to any other page on this web site that still has the almanac script running. I get a Java Script failure that locks everything up on my end.

This forum is slowwww on any computer I try to use. Nothing happens till the overwhelming amount of advertising finishes loading. Images are impossible, even fairly low resolution images take so long to display I simply won't take the time to wait to see an image!
