PICTURE OF THE DAYsee all »

The whole sky

The photographer captured this all-sky view in the Monsaraz parish of Portugal, behind the Church of the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Orada. Besides the yellow light visible near the horizon, which comes from surrounding villages, we also can see the pale green tone from a smooth airglow presence. Near the zenith (center of the image), the North America Nebula (NGC 7000) in Cygnus is clearly visible. Below, between the palm trees, we find the central region of the Milky Way. (Canon 60Da DSLR, 11mm lens at f/2.8, ISO 2000, mosaic of 23 shots, each a 30-second exposure)
