I went outside tonight and saw the ring around the moon. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that ice crystals shining in the glow of the moon?

Hopefully, someone with wide angle capabilities will get an image of that. It was awesome looking, and ominous at the same time because of the thin clouds inside the ring, and the few stars you could see twinking behind them. An awesome sight.

I was watching the moon last night as some low thin clouds passed by. It was quite a pretty picture, only if I had my camera with me. Most times it is the tiny ice crystals suspended high in the atmosphere that can cause that effect. However there are times it could just be the refractive dispersion of light through very thin layers of clouds or water droplets hanging in the air much like a rainbow.  What I saw last night was from the moisture in the clouds, what you saw may have been from ice crystals.   Anyways Check this out.

Yes, thats exactly what we saw. There were three stars that we could see within the ring, so according to that story - we should have bad weather within 3 days. Now to see if that bit of folklore holds true, or if its just a myth.

WoW!! Ive never seen a halo that big before! i havnt seen one in a while but when i do usually there is cold/snowy  great pic.

I did the other night, and low and behold I have had some nasty weather all day today..  So maybe there is a little truth to that folklore..
